Daisy Lane: Print & Book Artist Residency at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art
A new, ambitious, multi-use studio arts program at BIMA with a focus on printmaking and artists’ books!
Located only minutes from BIMA, Daisy Lane will be centered on a large, newly renovated, light-filled space where artists can create and explore in a focused environment while BIMA’s community can interact with the artists during the creation of new work.
The central program at Daisy Lane will be a year-round artist residency for artists working in book arts, letterpress, silkscreen, Risograph, and other related art forms. The space will also be an active location for youth engagement, BIMA’s Open Book Tours events, workshops, art events, and lectures.
ARTIST RESIDENCY
Nestled into the forested natural beauty of this island community, Daisy Lane’s artist residency is significant and special, not just for BIMA or on Bainbridge, but for the artist book community.
At any given time, Daisy Lane will host up to two resident artists: one local artist and one traveling artist. This allows the residency to support artists from the surrounding community while also bringing artists from outside the region to Bainbridge Island. Artists will be selected for a 2–4 week residency based on their conceptual creativity, technical knowledge, and familiarity with at least one of the studio offerings at Daisy Lane. Traditional and new technologies are encouraged. Resident artists will have access to the studio from 8 AM-10 PM daily.

THE WORKSPACE
Daisy Lane, located a short walk from the Bainbridge Island ferry dock, is a studio distinguished by stunning views and an open, modern architectural style featuring reclaimed wood, large windows, and concrete. Once a forgotten municipal storage facility built in 1978, it was transformed by Coates Design Architects into a celebrated model of adaptive reuse and with a LEED Gold certification.
BIMA has been fortunate to acquire equipment from the renowned letterpress, printmaking, and book design studio of Paper Hammer and Marquand Books (Tieton, WA). The space will be rounded out with other equipment from other sources.

THE STORY OF DAISY LANE
The dream of a museum-based artist-in-residence program took shape in late 2020 after first hearing from artists about the challenging landscape caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the loss of jobs, studio space, and their physical and online marketplaces. BIMA’s leadership began to rethink how the museum could reshape its resources to help artists more directly. Art champion and museum founder Cynthia Sears encouraged the organization’s active pursuit of long-term strategies to help artists at different phases of their journey.
The resulting commitment first established BIMA’s annual BRAVA Awards followed by the pursuit of an artist-in-residence program. With Daisy Lane, BIMA joins a handful of other innovative museums throughout the United States that offer embedded artist residency programs, providing selected artists with the space, equipment, time, and support to develop work on-site while connecting with the museum community.

Application Process
How are artists selected?
Applications will open once a year. Artists are selected using a panel selection process. Awarded residencies from each application cycle will be scheduled for the following calendar year.
Can I break up the residency into multiple shorter residencies?
No, residency must be scheduled to occur at one time.
How competitive is the residency?
We just started, but will have a statistical report after our first selection process concludes.
When will I hear about the status of my application?
Within the month of February 2027.
Are applicants considered on a rolling basis?
No, there is one application application review period per year. To be considered for the following year, artists must apply again.
When does the 2026 application open and close?
Applications will be accepted October 1 -December 1, 2026
Is there an application fee to apply for a residency?
Application fees can be waived in the application portal.
Housing & Travel
Is housing provided?
Yes, a one-bedroom apartment within a short walking distance to the Museum and the Daisy Lane Studios is available.
Who is eligible for residency housing?
Anyone can request housing be provided.
What is housing like?
Residents are provided with a private one-bedroom apartment within a five-minute walk of the studio for the duration of the residency. The apartment is furnished and includes laundry facilities, extra linens, and basic household items.
Can I bring a partner, family member, or collaborator?
If applying as a collaborative team, please indicate this in your application. Housing is not provided for your spouse, partners, children, and other family members.
Are pets allowed?
Sorry, no pets are allowed in the housing, Museum, or studio. Service animals are welcome.
Are meals provided?
Residents are responsible for their own meals. However, each resident receives a $125 weekly expense account to use at the BIMA Bistro for meals and coffee, at their discretion.
Stipend & Cost
Is there a travel stipend?
No.
What expenses am I responsible for?
Residents are provided a weekly stipend and materials budget. All other expenses are the artist’s responsibility.
Can part of the stipend be used for technical training or consultation?
Yes, this is organized in your residency contract.
When is the stipend paid?
Artists receive the stipend upon arrival at Daisy Lane.
Are artists responsible for taxes on the stipend?
Yes. Artists are responsible for submitting any applicable taxes on their stipend on their tax returns. Artists are required to complete and submit a W-9 to BIMA before a stipend can be issued.
Expectations & Public Engagement
What is expected of artists during the residency?
Artists can set their own goals and schedule. Extensions to residency time cannot be accommodated.
How much time are artists expected to spend in the studio?

Are artists required to complete a specific project or produce finished work?
No, artists can set their own goals and schedule.
Am I expected to donate work to the Cynthia Sears Artists’ Books Collection or residency?
No.
Will I be expected to host or participate in a public program during my residency?
Public programming is not a required part of the residency; however, residents are welcome to collaborate with BIMA staff to develop a public program if they would like.
Will members of the public visit my studio?
Periodically, members of the public may tour the studio during your residency. Artists will be notified in advance of any scheduled visitors.
Will my work be exhibited at the end of the residency?
No.

Is the Daisy Lane studio wheelchair accessible?
The first floor of the studio is wheelchair accessible. Accessibility modifications to the studio and equipment can be requested. The mezzanine level of Daisy Lane is not wheelchair accessible.
Is the housing wheelchair accessible?
Wheelchair accessible housing is available upon request.
