Bella Kim: Transformations
Past Exhibition

Bella Kim (Gig Harbor) began using recycled materials due to necessity, such as making a Barbie Doll skirt out of old socks. Fifty years later, Kim is focused on using recycled materials out of concern for our planet, hoping to transform and reduce waste. Her two-story Beacon Window installation incorporates reused plastics, largely from packaging materials. She is inspired by Korean traditional art, contemporary Western abstract art, and interest in the natural world. Her sewn pieces combine color, composition, texture, and transparency to create beautiful and ethereal installation works from what was discarded. Kim hopes viewers will think about their connections to the environment, and how to help build a better future together.
