Strawberry Fields Forever: Picker Cabin Stories

Experience the picker cabin stories of the Indipino, Filipino, and Japanese farm children, now elders, who grew up in the Bainbridge Island strawberry and raspberry field culture during the 1940s and 1950s. This short film explores the history of picker cabins on Bainbridge, who lived in them, and the cultural legacy they hold today. The stories are told from the memories of farm owner children who interacted with First Nation families who came from Canada during the summer months to pick berries and the Filipino workers who lived in the cabins during fall, winter, and spring months to help with various pruning, plowing, and planting chores. The film also captures footage of Akio Suyematsu’s historic farms on Manzanita and Day Road and records stories told by current berry farmers Akio mentored in the 1980s. Picker cabins are cultural artifacts and legacies that connect to broader themes of land and agriculture.
