In 1979, in order to combat overpopulation and starvation, China instituted a policy of one-child per household – and it enforced this policy for over 35 years. Documentarian Nanfu Wang returns to China and weaves her experience as a brand-new mother with archival propaganda material, testimony from victims and those who carried out the enforcement, what this enforcement entailed, and shows how this social experiment affects Chinese families today.
