“Lost in the Familiar” started in April 2020, close to the beginning of the Covid-19 Lockdown. It was made in response to the feeling in the air, the new and old sense of time, the feeling that living your own life was at times a completely unfamiliar endeavor. Without our customary obligations, the days disappeared, the sense of time was slow and unmoving—our minds moving through their own internal forests. Without our usual landmarks, memory slipped. The performer uses this sensibility, this constant and slow movement of time, making you question whether any time has passed or whether you’ve been watching her for a year. She makes her way through the forest in a methodical dance, each movement the same and yet new, until the performance reaches its end. As the lights go down, you realize that the dancer is stuck in that slow-moving world forever, while we are finding ways to move on.
