Pride – smARTfilms: Make Me Smile Series
Join us for four weeks of films featuring gentle comedies with wit and absurdities, some pathos, and affability! The Make Me Smile Series is designed with that sole purpose in mind—to make us smile! As the perfect balm for the Pacific Northwest’s grey, December days, these films are a solid way to get ready for the holiday season and a most amusing way to end the Year 2021.
FEATURED FILM – Pride (England)
2014 | 1h59m | R (language, brief nudity)
Based on a true story in a decade when casual homophobia was the norm, London-based gays & lesbians drove their minibuses and camper vans to a bleak mining town in South Wales to present monetary donations to a large group of striking miners. Set against the labor struggles of 1984, the unfolding events say a lot about what it means to be empathetic, to overcome dissent, and to face common enemies: Margaret Thatcher, the conservative tabloids, the police. The film is heart-warming and funny, with the ensemble bouncing off each other like an all-Welsh ping-pong match. But for every moment of humor there is a moment of poignancy, depicting two contrasting communities who are both desperate for help and support.
