Pamela Wachtler: Impressions Of Place
Past Exhibition

Local landscape artist Wachtler presents impressionistic paintings and monotypes, based on regional and iconic landscapes.

Pamela Wachtler lives and works on Bainbridge Island. She received a BFA from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, in 1972. She has lived in the Northwest since 1977. After a 25 year career in commercial design and illustration, Wachtler chose to focus full-time on fine art.

Wachtler’s paintings and monotype prints are based in traditions of plein air painting. She has developed her own impressionistic style, blending details of places she enjoys in a realistic and sensitive manner. She was particularly inspired by “The Philadelphia Ten,” a group of women artists whose affiliations include Moore College of Art and Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. These artists exhibited together from 1917 to 1945, along the East Coast and in the Midwest.

The silvery gray skies and waters of the Northwest are a natural fit for Wachtler’s artistic sensibilities. She describes the warm and enveloping feeling she experiences through our local landscapes – and how the combination of light and regional color palettes are rendered in her work. Her artistic style has been described by critics as being “magical and mysterious within a strong compositional framework and rich palette.”

In more recent years she has enjoyed creating monotypes. The addition of this process has expanded her artistic techniques. It also added the elements of discovery and surprise inherent in printmaking.

Wachtler is represented in the Northwest by White Bird Gallery (Canon Beach, OR), and Smith & Vallee Gallery (Edison, WA). She is represented locally by Roby King Gallery (Bainbridge Island, WA).
